“I regret my actions” Dutch national team finally apologizes after pro-establishment fan ‘assault’ goes public

Dutch international Steven Berhuis (31-AJAX) has apologized after a video of his assault on a fan surfaced.

Berhuis came on as a 27th-minute substitute in the final round of the 2022-2023 Dutch Eredivisie against Twente at the Enschede de Grolsch 메이저놀이터 Veste stadium in the Netherlands on Sept. 28 (ET). However, defending champions Ajax lost the match 1-3, ending the season in third place behind Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven.

The assault happened after the game. Berhawis got into an altercation with Twente fans before boarding the team bus.

Video footage shows him punching a fan in the face. According to Dutch media, Berhuis was angered by racist comments directed at teammate Brian Broome, leading to the assault.

But Twente is Berhawis’ home team. The former Twente youth product made his professional debut with the club. As a youth player, he was tested by Tottenham and Chelsea, but neither club signed him. He spent one season with Watford in the English Premier League (EPL) in the 2015-2016 season, but only made 11 appearances.

On Sept. 29, Berhawis released an apology statement, saying, “I regret my actions. I shouldn’t have done it,” he said, adding, “I’m used to it now, but people think they can shout anything, but my reaction doesn’t solve anything. I have to set an example as an Ajax player,” he said.
